How can I implement healthy habits?

Gaahh! So – I made this new years’ resolution to prioritize my health and embrace a healthy lifestyle. I’ve made many attempts but never managed to stick to a new, healthy routine. Life just keeps happening and something seems to always get in the way. I could really use some help here! I just want to make good choices for myself and implement healthy everyday habits.

Michelle, we’ve all been there. A glass of champagne in hand, filled with courage (some of it could be liquid), ambition, hopes for the future and determination to make this new year the best one ever. An amazing feeling, right! So, first things first – congratulations to wanting to live your best life. Now, what does living your best life mean to you? And what do you need to start moving in that direction?

It’s always a good idea to start with awareness. Tune in to your body and really listen. It’s easy to get caught up in all the “shoulds” out there. But the thing is, if it’s a “should” the only thing you should do is move on. It’s never about the “should” and all about the “want”. But this navigation is easier said than done! And we can all benefit from a friendly reminder to take a break, a few deep breaths and just listen to what our bodies are really saying.

When you’ve heard your body loud and clear; “Let me move for a change you lazy bitch” or “That massage you promised to take me to on New Year’s day – I’m still waiting….” Or “I really need some coconut water and veggies after this weekend”, it’s time to listen to your heart and soul. What makes you smile? When do you feel proud of yourself? What gets you excited?

Now, you go for the combo of what your body needs and what your heart and soul loves. Voilà: You have identified your healthy pleasures! Start getting excited about finding ways to incorporate these fabulous healthy pleasures into your routine. Maybe your body is craving healthy meals, and you’re a creative soul who loves cooking. Start brainstorming new recipes! If your body would benefit from some exercise and you’re a curious one – try a new workout. Who knows, maybe you’ll find your inner MMA fighter or ballerina? You get the point.

So – what if my motivation fails me, you ask. What do I do when there is just no time? This is where you tune into your why. Why is a healthy lifestyle important to you? You might have to peel back some layers here. “It’s good to be healthy” won’t do. Why is it good for you? What do you gain? And why is that important? When your onion is about half the size it was when you started peeling back those layers, you’re starting to find your true why. Use this why to remind and motivate you! It could be a note on the fridge, a background picture on your phone or something else that speaks to you. As long as it speaks with a loving voice, you’re good.

Good luck with your healthy pleasures!
